Must read

In July, the world witnessed a flurry of major news events that captivated audiences across the globe. From an assassination attempt against Donald Trump to Joe Biden announcing he would not stand for re-election as US president, and the commencement of the Paris Olympics, it was a month filled with significant developments. These events drove a surge in traffic to news websites, with many of the world’s biggest news platforms experiencing strong growth.

Among the fastest-growing English language news websites in the world, the majority were based in the US. Newsweek, ABC News, and AP News all saw an increase of more than 100% in traffic compared to the previous year. Interestingly, all of the fastest-growing sites in the top 50 were US-based, with the exception of India-based NDTV.com. This trend highlights the dominance of American news outlets in the digital space.

In terms of overall growth, seven out of the top ten English language news websites in the world saw an increase in traffic year on year. CNN and Fox News were among the top performers, with both sites experiencing growth of more than 20%. Despite this, the BBC retained its position as the biggest news website in the world, with a staggering 1.2 billion visits per month. It’s worth noting that this figure includes the entire BBC website domain, not just the news section.

Looking at month-on-month growth, ABC News in the US emerged as the fastest-growing global top-50 news website, with a remarkable 79% increase in traffic. UK-based Sky News also saw significant growth, with a 47% increase in visits. These figures underscore the dynamic nature of the news industry and the ever-changing preferences of online audiences.

As we delve deeper into the data from previous months, we see a consistent pattern of growth and fluctuation among the top news websites. In May, the BBC led the pack as the fastest-growing of the top ten news websites, with a 9% increase in visits compared to April. Similarly, in April, India Times emerged as the biggest-growing news website in the world, with an 87% year-on-year increase in traffic.

March saw Newsweek as the biggest-growing news website, with visits more than doubling compared to the previous year. This trend continued in February, with India Times taking the top spot as the fastest-growing site. In January, CNN experienced a surge in traffic, making it the fastest-growing top 10 news website for that month.

Overall, the data reflects the dynamic nature of the news industry, with news websites constantly vying for audience attention and engagement. As major events unfold around the world, these platforms play a crucial role in disseminating information and shaping public discourse. The growth of these websites underscores the importance of digital news consumption in today’s fast-paced world.
