The Skerbeck family has a rich history in the outdoor amusement industry, spanning six generations. It all started in 1857 when Frank Skerbeck Sr. transitioned from owning a factory to starting a circus in Bohemia. His son, Frank Jr., brought the family to America in the 1880s, settling in Wisconsin. The early Skerbeck circuses featured traveling acts in a tent, with family members performing various acts such as sword swallowing and trapeze.
As the business evolved, rides were introduced, and the Skerbeck family’s shows became a blend of circus and carnival entertainment. The third generation, Joe and Gus, took over the management, followed by Joe’s children, Eugene and Pauline, in the 1950s. By the 1970s, the business had grown significantly, with Joe and Bill (children of Eugene) running Skerbeck Bros. Shows with their spouses, Debra and C.J.
Today, three distinct groups of cousins operate their own carnival companies in Wisconsin and Michigan, with Skerbeck Entertainment Group at the heart of the Upper Peninsula State Fair in Escanaba. The current owners, Jamie Skerbeck, Niki Skerbeck, and Tory Burrows, are of the sixth generation involved in the industry. They, along with their spouses, run the business, providing entertainment at various events across the Midwest.
Setting up the show is a logistical feat, requiring precise planning and coordination. More than 100 employees travel with Skerbeck Entertainment Group, working tirelessly to set up, operate, and take down rides and booths from April to October. The U.P. State Fair in Escanaba is a highlight of their season, drawing in crowds with a unique blend of entertainment and local flavor.
Behind the scenes, the fair is a bustling temporary city, with employees from various backgrounds coming together to create a memorable experience for fairgoers. Safety is a top priority, with daily inspections and checks performed on every ride. Co-owner John Burrows, a nationally certified safety supervisor, ensures that all safety protocols are followed to maintain a stellar safety record.
Despite the challenges of running a carnival company, the Skerbeck family finds fulfillment in seeing families enjoy themselves at the fair and knowing that the local community benefits from the business brought in by the event. The family’s dedication to providing safe and enjoyable entertainment is evident in their commitment to excellence and continuous improvement.
As they look to the future, the Skerbeck family is excited about the arrival of a new ride from the Czech Republic, showcasing their ongoing commitment to innovation and growth in the outdoor amusement industry. With a legacy spanning six generations, the Skerbeck family continues to delight audiences and create lasting memories at fairs and events across the Midwest.
